2017 in Review: That Time I Flew Across the Country by Myself for the First Time

2017 in Review: My word of the year was "Adventure", and my motto statement was "Do It Scared".  I didn't know how I could do something like travel to San Diego by myself where I wouldn't know anyone to attend a conference, but in March, I chose adventure and did it scared! I'm so glad I did because I learned a lot and got to see some amazing California beaches and watched the sun set on the west coast, saw wild seals on the beach, took a trip to the San Diego zoo, and made some new connections. 🌞 I'm so thankful for that opportunity!

2017 in Review: That Time that Dad went into the Hospital and Scared us All

2017 Year in Review: in February my dad went into the hospital and it was really, really scary. He went in with pneumonia but wound up having to get surgery because the fluid had walled off and was staying in a pocket around his lungs (I'm no doctor but I think that was kind of the gist of it, anyway).  It was terrifying as my dad grew weaker and weaker and the hospital would parade doctor after doctor in, and everyone had a different opinion of what was going on.  Thankfully someone realized that if it has hooves and gallups it's probably a horse, but sometimes it's a zebra, and in this case my dad was the zebra.  They were able to figure out the problem finally, and after surgery, he bounced back and was even more lively than before!  I stayed with my parents a lot while all this was happening, and we were able to strengthen our relationship. I always look for the silver lining, and while I hate so much that my dad had to go through that, I am so grateful f

2017 in Review: That Time I Embraced the World of Dungeons & Dragons

2017 in Review: My word of the year was "Adventure", and my motto statement was "Do It Scared". In January I finally succumbed to my husband's pestering to play Dungeons & Dragons. I thought "oh great, I see what a money sink it is for you, let's get 2 people involved and we'll be homeless in no time!" However, I chose adventure and did it scared. ' I didn't realize it was just a "choose your own adventure" kind of game. I wound up having a ton of fun and learning a lot about myself and decision-making skills too! Pretty soon I had a cleric named Aurora Hawkwind and a bard named Wematonye that were tiny epitomes of the very thing I aspire to be-- kind, brave, and not afraid to kill monsters. 👹

The Blog Monster

It’s late at night, and I can’t sleep. It’s calling out to me, like a distant drum beating. I close my eyes, and I can just barely make out the word from so far away. But the tighter I close my eyes, the more I try to ignore it and roll over and just go to sleep already, the louder and larger that word becomes. Shut up, you! I have to work tomorrow. On a computer. I don’t think I have the eyesight to sustain many more hours staring at a screen. And yet it will not be ignored. It grows, and grows, louder and larger. At first it kind of sounds like footsteps in the distance. blogblog. blogblog. blogblog… I try to shut it out. I have put this part of me away, you see, so that I can focus on having a great job and a great life. And it has been quite the spectacular life since I put away my pens and my laptop… blogblog. blogblog. blogblog… Again, the rhythm of it is like my heart beating, but it’s becoming louder and louder as I lie in bed, tossing and turning and trying n
